South Savo (Etelä-Savo)

South Savo is the most environmentally friendly region in Finland, located just 2 hours away from Helsinki. The region is rich in lakes and beautiful nature. The largest lake in Finland - lake Saimaa, is located here. Swimming in crystal clear water, fishing, forest walks and bike tours, lake cruises, kayaking and many other possibilities are there at the South Savo.

It is a great place to visit both in summer and in winter. In winter, you can go skiing or snowboarding at one of the 4 ski resorts: Tornimaki, Khasa, Lecotti, Ruunarintet. During the whole year, a lot of sport, cultural and musical events take place at the South Savo; at the local restaurants you can taste delicious dishes and drinks from the fresh regional products. The two largest cities of the region are Savonlinna and Mikkeli. In Savonlinna you can visit the castle of Olavinlinna, which was founded in 1639, the city also hosts the famous annual opera festival of Savonlinna; in Mikkeli - the Mikkeli Cathedral, the Museum of Infantry and Bunker Museum bets of Manerheim, and the Visulahti Park, with the largest museum of wax figures in Finland.  Also you can find the world's largest wooden church in Kerimäki
